Ever look around at the world and wonder why is it so wrong? Why is there murder, divorce, war, famine, and poverty? The root cause of all this suffering is sin. Sin is anything that goes against God’s law and the Bible tells us in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” There’s an easy test to see if this is true or not. Have you ever told a lie, regardless of how ‘serious’ or ‘small’ it was? That’s commandment number nine of the ten commandments. Have you ever stolen anything? It doesn’t matter what the material value of the item was, taking something that does not belong to you is a violation of commandment eight. That’s only two out of ten and we’re not even looking at whether or not you were ever disrespectful toward your parents (commandment five)! If you were to stand before God and He were to judge you by His commandments you would be found guilty, just as would everybody else. None of us are perfect and can live up to God’s standards.
You may say, “what about all the good I’ve done?” This a very common question and now let us look to the Bible so we can see how God views it. In Isaiah 64:6 we read, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousenesses are as filthy rags…” Have you ever tried to clean a dirty window with a dirty rag? It doesn’t work. James 2:10 goes on to tell us that breaking even one commandment makes us guilty of all of them! God is a holy and just judge, He can’t let that slide! If a murderer stood before a human judge guilty of murder would a just judge let him off because of good deeds the criminal has done? God has given us ten clear laws and we have all broken them. If we were to stand before God and be judged by His law we would be unequivocally guilty! What would our sentence be?
The beginning of Romans 6:23 tells us what our sentence is, “For the wages of sin is death;” This isn’t just a physical death but also a spiritual death and separation from God. If we die in our sins are to be forever separated from God and will suffer eternal punishment with all who have rebelled against God. But this is not the end of the story! God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance! (2 Peter 3:9b) The last half of Romans 6:23 says, “But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 5:8 goes on to tell us, “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” God sent His only Son (John 3:16) to live among us. Jesus humbled Himself to be born as a human and was perfect. He never violated God’s law. He was crucified for our sins and His holy and perfect blood was able to atone for all of our sins. In essence, Jesus steps up to the judge and pays the fines for our crimes, all we have to do is to be willing to admit that we are guilty of God’s law and have no hope without redemption through Jesus Christ. By accepting God’s free gift of atonement through His Son and turning away from the sins that kept us separated from God we are able to cleansed of our sins and unrighteouseness (1 John 1:9).
But Jesus didn’t just die for our sins, after three days He rose from the dead, conquering death, and now sits at the right hand of God (Acts 2:39) and acts a mediator between us and God the Father (1 Timothy 2:5). Because Jesus has overcome we are able to be adopted into the family of God and to be joint-heirs with Jesus. We have an eternal hope in Heaven and to have a relationship with God!
